September 28th, 2018

It was another great week in Kindergarten!

This week we learned about:

Reading- Understanding Characters & Beginning Sounds
Math- Comparing Numbers to 5
Religion- God always shares his love with us and we can share this by sharing our love to other people.
Social Studies- Unit 1 Assessment

If you would like, you may send an oversized t-shirt for your student to wear during art. Art day is on mass days, so we are wearing nice clothes and it does get a little messy when we paint!

If you have not sent headphones for your child yet, please do so.

I sent home the Book It reading calendar. Every day your child reads 10 minutes, color in a cat. Color in at least 25 cats to get a prize!

On Wednesday, we celebrated Johnny Appleseed day by making apple prints with actual apples!

We started writers workshop this week! We each have a Writer's Workshop folders and are practicing working independently.

We used paint dotters to find our sight work "like" in our sight word journal. This was a lot of fun!

We really got into using our iPads this week. We play this really fun app called Teach Your Monster to Read that helps us practice our letter sounds and words. This app is free to download and play until Sunday. Feel free download it for practice at home! https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjworfdBRA7EiwAKX9HeMwn7StgGkvZ_xCr1tVS-fdYYLMl_NHgwhYsT6h92Pi8ft9F4Grv5BoCmcMQAvD_BwE
It is also free to play on the computer.

Happy Thursday!

Just a reminder that St. Malachy DOES have school next Monday even though Creston Public Schools are closed.

Friday, September 21st is an early dismissal- 12:40 for homecoming.

Thank you to all families that have donated snacks! We are well stocked for a while and I will post either on here or in the newsletter when we are running short and are in need of more donations.

Student of the day is going well! We love learning all about our classmates. Harper was our student of the day on Monday, Braden on Tuesday, Natalie on Wednesday, and today Finn is our student of the day. I am excited to continue this next week!

I sent home book orders in the take-home folder this week. This will help foster the love of reading at home! Please let me know if you have any questions. These are due back next Friday the 21st.

A Peek at our Learning:

Reading- Rhyming, Letter Sounds

Writing- Writing our names with one uppercase letter and the rest lowercase. Writing letters correctly.

Math- Represent, count, and write numbers 0 to 5- Test on Wednesday or Thursday

Social Studies- Our Community

Religion- God's Promise to Noah

Picutures:

We celebrated International Dot Day by reading The Dot and making our own dot art using Q-Tips

My grandpa built as a bench so we could sit on it and use it as a step stool to reach the smart board. We thanked him by writing a thank you card!

We did a letter hunt! We hid letters in kinetic sand and searched for them. Once we found the letters, we talked about what letter they found and what sound it makes.

Student of the Day

Hello! I'm so excited for another great week!

I just wanted to post to let everyone know that we are starting another fun thing this week, a student of the day!

Every morning at our morning meeting, I will draw a student to be the student of the day. This student will be line leader for the day and tell us all about his/her favorite things. We will study all about the letters and learn how to write that student's name. Every student will get a turn in the next two weeks!

I'm so excited to get started with this so we can get to know each other better and build classroom community.

Have a great week!

-Ms. Riley

Thank you for another great week!

On Wednesday, Kindergarten went to mass. We did great and really enjoyed the time.

In literacy time, we have been working hard on the letters A, B, C, and D and we are excited to learn the letters E, F, G, H, and I next week! We make crowns to wear throughout the day to practice the letter of the day and the sound that letter makes.

In math, we are working hard on Chapter 1: Numbers 0 to 5. I sent a pack of work pages in Thursdays take-home folder that your child can complete.

In religion, we are learning about creation.

In social studies, we are learning about our community.

Be sure to practice with your child writing their names with only the first letter capitalized!

Thank you.
